By car, it takes about two hours from Inverness to get to Achiltibuie and The Brochs of Coigach. The last 15 miles lead over a narrow single track road with passing places - one of Britains most scenic drives.  Inverness is linked by direct rail services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and London. Scotrail operates an overnight sleeper train from London www.scotrail.co.uk/caledoniansleeper/index.html

Inverness Airport is connected to London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Dublin and Amsterdam by several major airlines. Check www.ba.com, ww.easyjet.comwww.flybe.com and www.klm.com

In Inverness, all major car hire companies such as Avis, Hertz and Europcar maintain either airport or town offices.

We are not terribly far off the North Coast 500, which according to the PR is Scotland's answer to America's Route 66, It forms a loop around the northern Highlands from Inverness to John O’Groats in the north-east, along the rocky shore of the north and down the deeply indented west coast to Applecross. The itinerary was designed by a non-profit organisation established by the then Prince and now King Charles to promote the parts of the Highlands that he apparently is hugely fond of. Thankfully, though, we are not on it. It has generated too much traffic for our liking. We are still off the beaten track. The Scotsman's guide "Everything you need to know about Scotland's North Coast 500 road trip" nevertheless features The Brochs as the place to stay in Wester Ross!
